Qualgen Volunteers at Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games

Special Olympians from across Oklahoma came to Stillwater on May 16 to begin competing in the three-day Special Olympics Oklahoma (SOOK) Summer Games.

Summer Games are held every year in May in Stillwater. Sports competitions at Summer Games are athletics, bocce, bowling, golf, horseshoes, powerlifting and unified 3-on-3 basketball and unified softball.

“We believe that volunteering is extremely important,” Shaun Riney, Qualgen’s general manager said. “We have the ability to volunteer and we choose to use it.”

Qualgen’s volunteer team helped with the track and field awards on May 16.

“It was an extremely rewarding experience,” Nikki Good, Qualgen’s director of sales said. “We are already talking about making this an annual event and going back for all three days next year.”

Without volunteers, SOOK would not exist, according to the SOOK website. SOOK depends on the time, energy and dedication of thousands of energetic volunteers to fulfill their mission.

“We love what the Special Olympics does and think it is a great organization to give our time to,” Riney said.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

“Just seeing the joy on the Olympian’s faces when they received their award made it worth it,” Good said. “The relationships you get to create and happiness you get to help be a part of is all a bonus.”
